The Arts Talk: The Rhythms of Rebirth

A Reading of Aśvaghoṣa’s Verses on the Six Realms
Join us for the first public presentation of Aśvaghoṣa’s Verses on the Six Realms, translated by our very own DRBU students and faculty. In this short verse text, preserved in the Chinese Buddhist canon, the famous Buddhist poet Aśvaghoṣa introduces karma and explains the six realms of rebirth—and what deeds lead to them. Over the last three semesters, students, alumni, and faculty at DRBU have worked together to bring this text into lively and poetic English. After the reading of the text, we will reflect on the experience of translating the text and on the significance of its message.
Come and listen to our community members reading. After all, we know from the sūtras that the Buddha’s teachings were meant to be heard. Our readers are Dharma Master Jin Ben, Dharma Master Jin Zheng, Susan Rounds, Brandon Lannan, Justin Howe, and Vayu Aranda.
