These serene, luminous illustrations by Blue Cedar, created when she was seventeen and inspired by a dream of the peaceful life of a young novice in an ancient Buddhist monastery. Painted while she was a novice herself, the works offer an intimate glimpse into monastic life through gentle imagery, quiet moments, and a youthful artist’s vision.
The illustrations for Wu Mo’s Day were painted by Blue Cedar when she was seventeen, inspired by a dream she had about the peaceful life of a novice living in an ancient Buddhist monastery. At the time, she was a novice herself.
Years later, Dana and Terri added words to her paintings, bringing life to this lovely book. Dana and Terri also wrote two other books illustrated by Blue Cedar: Like the Great Earth and Dharma Bells, a children’s coloring book of Buddhist symbols.
Dana Green is the pen name of a Buddhist nun. Dana means “giving” in Sanskrit and Green refers to a green earth. Dana writes books that focus on helping children connect to their spiritual nature and also wrote a series on kindness to animals and respect for the earth. Her latest books are Giant Turtle’s Long Nap and Prince Siddhartha and the Bully. She lives at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, where she enjoys growing herbs and pollinator gardens.
Terri is a teacher and writer. She is one of the founders of Instilling Goodness School in Ukiah, California, and holds a BA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is co-author of Guan Yin, the Buddha’s Helper and Amitabha’s Happy Land. She continues to teach and lives in Ukiah.
About the Artist
Blue Cedar is now a Buddhist nun and lives at the City of Dharma Realm near Sacramento, where she is a teacher. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Davis. Her artwork appears in many publications by the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, expressing her visions in radiant watercolors and lately, in simple, elegant line drawings.
