After DRBU
DRBU students leave prepared for a life of meaning, service, and purpose
DRBU graduates are unusually well placed to face a work landscape in which change and disruption are the norm. By deeply reflecting on the world’s philosophical, literary, and scientific classics, then honing and pressure-testing their ideas in a small seminar environment, they learn to find their own voice and confidently navigate diversity and disagreement. The skills they develop—communication, independence, deep listening, critical thinking—allow them to remain grounded and understand the essentials of any situation, even as the ground shifts under their feet.
Yet DRBU aims to prepare students not only for a successful career but, most of all, for a meaningful life. A key part of the curriculum is contemplative practices from various traditions, through which students learn to embody the wisdom of the texts they study. At DRBU, wisdom is living, not abstract. As they go out into the world, the inner compass they have developed sets them on a path to becoming flourishing, complete persons able to benefit themselves, those around them, and all of society.

I have been reflecting lately on what a transformative experience it was in the DRBU classroom to be deeply listened to, taken seriously, and entrusted with my own capacity for understanding. I try to adopt the same open and attentive attitude toward my students, an aspiration that brings joy to the task of teaching.

“The skills needed to succeed in today’s world and the future are curiosity, creativity, taking initiative, multi-disciplinary thinking and empathy. These skills, interestingly, are the skills specific to human beings that machines and robots cannot do.”
