UKIAH, Calif., — March 19, 2019 — Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) is pleased to announce a need-based scholarship for students affected by a natural disaster such as the Mendocino Complex Fire, Camp Fire, or Hurricane Harvey. The scholarship covers the cost of attendance, which includes tuition and on-campus room and board for the duration of the academic program.

“We have personally seen the catastrophic impact of the recent fires on our community and would like to reach out to students who are struggling to afford a college education as a result,” says President Susan Rounds. “We want to ensure that students are not forced to interrupt their education because of financial hardships created by a natural disaster.”

Students who are admitted and enrolled in the DRBU BA and MA programs are eligible for the scholarship if they are directly affected by a disaster declared by a governmental agency. The student must have disaster-relief status with FEMA or a comparable agency, or otherwise demonstrate financial need as a result of a loss of income or livelihood, or a loss or damage to home or property. Scholarship recipients are expected to participate in the University work-study program.

DRBU offers “Great Books”-style degree programs with a strong emphasis on Asian core texts and the integration of contemplative exercises—features that set DRBU apart from other liberal arts colleges. In 2018, DRBU was granted Initial Accreditation by the WASC Senior Commission of Universities and Colleges (WSCUC) for the maximum allowable period of six years. DRBU is the first and only accredited four-year college in Mendocino County.

“Over 75% of our undergraduate students receive financial aid from the University,” according to Wayne Chen, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. “The Disaster Relief Scholarship is part of our commitment to help our students meet their demonstrated financial needs. It is our sincere hope that family income or financial hardship does not divert students from their academic goals.”
