Snow-Covered Peaks: What Are Bodhisattvas Like?

Snow-Covered Peaks is a devotional book for children, retold from the Buddha's teaching. It is a great book for children to connect with their kind and caring nature. Beautiful artwork is combined with text, introducing children to the most significant values of Buddhism, such as loving-kindness, compassion, giving, and courage. On each page, the reader meets one of the Buddha's helpers, a wise and kind Bodhisattva, and learns what's special about them. The book ends with a message of how children can bring peace in the world by being a Bodhisattva, too.

Come Back, O Tiger!

Meet two whimsical tree spirits, one wise and the other foolish. They play together happily until one night a tiger sat under the tree of the foolish spirit, growling and gnawing on a stinking carcass. The foolish tree spirit said, "The tiger is making a mess. The air is no longer fresh and clean. I’m getting rid of that beast!" The wise tree spirit said, "Please don’t! The life of the forest depends on the tiger." But the foolish tree spirit didn’t listen.

Years passed and peace still reigned in the forest. But one day a boy came to the forest and saw that the tiger was gone. Soon the forest was full of people cutting down trees for houses, building fires, and piling up trash. Can the forest be saved?

Rich illustrations breathe life into the retelling of this Jataka tale, in which the Buddha appears as a wise tree spirit to teach that every being is a living part of the earth and has its place in nature.

Activities are included to help children connect with the lesson in the story and how to lessen their own carbon imprint.

An Honorable Mention from BTTS

The Kind Monk

A heartwarming biography about the much beloved and celebrated monk, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, who brought Buddhism to America. The simple accessible manner in which the stories of his life are told does not distract from the power to inspire children, and the illustrations add to the richness of the telling.

"The Kind Monk" is a heartwarming picture book biography about the much beloved and celebrated monk, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, who was most influential in bringing Buddhism to America. The simple, accessible manner in which the stories of his life are told by author Bhikshuni Jin Rou does not distract from the power to inspire children, and the lovely illustrations by artist Huang-Yun Song add to the richness of the telling -- making "The Kind Monk" an elegantly splendid, impressively informative, and unreservedly recommended addition to family, elementary school, middle school, and community library Buddhist Studies collections and personal reading lists. midwestbookreview.com
